Iceland is one of the most fascinating countries when it comes to nature in Europe! The blue lagoon is probably the most known besides the geysers. But is the hype worth it?

What is the blue lagoon?

The blue lagoon is a geothermal spa, which is located in a lava field, not far from the capital city Reykjavik.

The lagoon is man-made, which I didn’t know about before going there.

It is about 50 km away, with yearly estimated 700.000 visitors, in the year 2014, surely the number will be higher now.

It is clearly a top tourist destination.

The water is milky blue, because of the way silica reflects the light when being in water.

With the minerals in the water, the water is supposed to be really good for the skin.

Also it is important to shower naked before entering the water, for keeping it as clean as possible.

How to get to the blue lagoon?

When not having a rental car, you can take a bus for around $50 from the capital, which is a bit cheaper than the entry. From the airport the distance would be only 20 km, but there is no connection to the lagoon, besides taxi. You don’t want to take a taxi in Iceland, when wanting to save money.

Also durable in Iceland would be hitchhiking, like this you could save at least some amount of money when wanting to visit the blue lagoon.

How was my experience?

I went to the blue lagoon with my father in 2018. It was February, so it was really cold outside!

We decided to go to the blue lagoon, because it is something that is known. When arriving, there was a huge line at the entrance. After we got in, the lagoon looked amazing. That is probably a general thought of it.

Same with the fact that it is packed with many people, that was expected.

The water was really warm, which was perfect during the freezing temperature outside of the water.

In the water, you have a bar, where you can get your drink, included in the ticket price. It was interesting having a bar in the water, where you were swimming in. Also in the water was the stand, where you are receiving the face mask.

After spending a little while inside the water, we went out and were resting in a public area, where it was possible to lay down and relax, with a view of the lagoon.

I found it more relaxing, then in the water itself. The reason, it was really packed. For me, it is especially really hard to relax, in between many people. In summer I suppose that there will be even more people visiting during the day.

Prices

The cheapest option for the entry will be at least $60. On most days when the demand is high, the price will increase as well. For basically a pair of slippers and when having dinner at the restaurant a sparkling wine, you need to pay $20 more.

When you like to spend money for at least $418 you can get five hours in a special spa section. Of course on some days it is possible to spend more than that. While clicking through the websites, to find prices it was hard finding the cheapest option.

Blue Lagoon Iceland have also everything listed. Here what is included in the comfort, so the standard:

  1. Entrance to the Blue Lagoon
  2. Silica mud mask
  3. Use of towel
  4. drink of your choice

Of course, generally speaking Iceland is really expensive. For basically being in some hot water, which you can do in many places in Iceland even for free. Just for being in a touristic hotspot, getting a face mask and a drink, I don’t know if that is worth the money.

Summary

When going to Iceland, you need to expect that it will be expensive, everything is expensive, even in the supermarket. When thinking about a highly visited touristic place, of course it is then also highly priced. The people will visit anyway.

The blue lagoon and the surrounding area are beautiful. Due to that, you can take many nice pictures.

If you just want to experience hot thermal water, you can find many of those places, for free!

For me it was nice to visit the blue lagoon, but I would not need to see it again, one time is enough for me. For many people I talked to, they said the same. So from my whole trip in Iceland, the blue lagoon was not part of my favorite places, which are possible to visit. It was not as impressive as I was hoping. But really talking is bad, would be not fair and also a lie, due to the fact, that it is not bad, just really highly priced. The price is honestly a big point, why you could see it differently. If that is not a big deal, then you should visit it.

When you decide to visit the blue lagoon, try to choose a time, when not many people will be visiting it, by cheaper prices you can find that out. Thinking about any touristic area, usually when going early, less people are going to be there.
