Comino Island is a small, beautiful island between the main islands Malta and Gozo in the Mediterranean Sea. It’s famous for its clear blue waters and the Blue Lagoon, which is a great spot for swimming and snorkeling. The island has rocky cliffs, wild plants, and a few small caves, making it perfect for nature lovers. Since almost nobody lives there, it can be a peaceful place to visit and enjoy the quiet and natural beauty.
How to reach Comino Island?
Basically there is only one option, you need to take a boat from Malta or Gozo. You just need to go in the harbor and get a little boat to reach the harbor. Also some yachts are visiting Comino Island, but reaching it with them might be more difficult.
With the people driving to the island you are also able to negotiate the price a little bit, because for most of them it is an easy way to get some money on the side without paying taxes, when it is a small boat.
What can you do in Comino Island?
Basically not much. There is not really infrastructure on the island. There are almost no houses. The only worth mentioning building is a huge castle and some ancient weapons for protection. The reason why people are coming to Comino Island are the beaches with clear water.
Indeed the beaches are decent in Comino Island, but the issue is that there is a huge amount of tourists coming every day. With them there are sellers reaching the island, who are using food trucks to sell you very overpriced food. That’s why you should bring your own food.
Accommodation in Comino Island
There is basically no hotel available, the only possibility is camping or knocking at the door of the few people living there. That is the reason why there are almost only day tourists in Comino.
It really depends on the season, but there is one little campground on the island, which I assume is also for free. There you can find some fellow campers with whom you can spend some great time together.
I was also camping there and slept somewhere else, which ended up being the first night super uncomfortable and the second one amazing with a great view from a cliff.
Is Comino Island in Malta worth a visit?
I would say it is worth visiting Comino Island, but mainly when you visit to stay at least a night. It is very peaceful at night with all the day tourists leaving the island. You basically are having the island for yourself and can just enjoy the peace there.
During the day it is honestly very annoying with the day tourists. Mainly they are young people drinking and being loud at the two good beaches. There is loud music at the main entrance and it is ruining the peace which is happening in the evening, night and morning. Many people are just coming there for a party, so it is basically up to you a bit, if you are enjoying that so much.
I personally would come back, but trying to avoid the masses of tourists by going to places where they are not active. The good thing is, that the island isn’t big, so you can easily walk around the island in a day.
Summary
Comino Island in Malta is a popular travel destination for daily visitors. It is a beautiful island with not much to do, besides swimming and walking. You need to bring some food with you, when you don’t want to be overcharged for food at the island. The real magic is appearing when the night is coming and the day tourists are leaving, so I can highly recommend you just checking it out and best would be, if you bring your tent with you.
