After the beer pong tournament it was time to finally drive with the bus from Tallinn in Estonia to Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania.
Arriving in Vilnius
The busride took quite some time and especially with the annoying people in the back the ride was really annoying. Marcel was luckily able to sleep the whole time and was full of energy after we arrived in the capital.
The city was really pretty at the first moment with many old buildings with Clean Streets. We booked a room near the Old Town. Sadly we were rejected from our couch surfing host at the last minute. This was really annoying because we were hoping to stay there. In the end we received some recommendations for the city. In the end it wasn’t that bad because I still had to do some work which I did online. When staying with a local host it always feels a little bit necessary to spend time with them. This isn’t something bad but still when you need to do some online work it can slow you down.
For me it’s my second time in Lithuania but the first time that I made it to the capital. I was excited to explore a new city with my friend. Marcel was very sleepy the first day even though he definitely had enough sleep during the Busride. While I did some work he was still sleeping. To be fair it was good to not be interrupted but I wish I also could have that amount of sleep.
Exploring the city
It was my day off and it was a perfect time. We were able to go out and explore This City. There were no tourists exploring it with us, which I always like. In general in the whole Baltic states there are not that many tourists which makes it the perfect place to go in October. While all the tourists are going somewhere warm. I love it when I have not that many internationals around me. Being able to see sights with not that many others. Besides many churches which are found all over the city we went on top of all the Castle with a great overview of the capital. Due to having fall it was really beautiful seeing all the trees with the different colors. Being able to walk through those streets and seeing how life gets a little slower and people preparing themselves forward. I personally like it a lot when it’s a little bit colder. You can always get warmer with your clothes but in summer. When it’s really hot it’s not possible to get more than all of your clothes off in order to handle the temperature.
Vilnius is a great city and honestly speaking really beautiful but of course we were not seeing only beautiful things. For example when visiting an old prison it wasn’t technically beautiful but still the place told us many stories and capturing great pictures was possible over there. In general it was really cool to see that mainly everyone was speaking in English with us which made the communication a lot easier.
Museum of Illusions
Marcel really wanted to go to the museum of Illusions. It was a good idea At the end even though the price was not my highlight. The employees were explaining to us all of the illusions and always tried to check on us to make the experience a lot better and understanding. There are many visual illusions which were not easy to understand at first. With the help of the employees it was a lot easier to get guided through it.
Even though there was technically not that much to do. We spent a few hours inside the Museum and actually were experimenting with everything we saw over there. We also took many videos and pictures while exploring the place and being explained about the illusions. Some illusions definitely confused me a lot. They still don’t make any sense to me even though we’ve been explained it. it is just that the mind just doesn’t understand the logic behind everything over there and can’t process it in logical parts.
It was cool that we were able to Almost touch everything there and experience the illusions for ourselves instead of watching some video of it. In the end it was a cool experience even though it wasn’t that cheap when thinking about museums in the Baltics but still it is a special place and if you have time while visiting the city why not check it out.
Exploring with Marcel
For us it was our first trip together but not the first time being in a different country to gather just there were always different people with us. This time it was a little bit different because it was just us exploring the city but actually it was a lot of fun. We were seeing many things and motivated each other to go a little bit outside of our comfort zone. In order to get even crazier experiences. If it would be just myself visiting Lithuania it would be different. Just me walking around the town and maybe walking in some building to find out what it is to get something to eat and just relax.
Usually traveling with a friend from you is a little bit hard and not my favorite thing to do because of different interests while traveling. with Marcel it is a little bit different because we kind of have the same energy when traveling so that was something new for me but also something really positive.
We walked many kilometers every day to play chess outside and found interesting things to explore. He had things in mind he wanted to do. I was cool with it and I had things in mind which I wanted to do and he was cool with that as well so actually a perfect combination.
Vilnius
As mentioned already, Vilnius is a cool city and probably one of the best capitals I have visited so far. I can definitely recommend it. Adding to this there are just not many tourists but a lot of interesting things to see. The locals are really friendly and the food tastes good and also is cheaper than at home. This is always something positive when traveling to these countries. It is also cool to get easy from A to B without needing public transportation because the distance is not that big. You have mountains surrounded by nature and a beautiful old town with historical buildings. It is also just clean and authentic on the other side which is just a positive combination of things.
Getting back home
Getting home was a real pain in the ass. I took a bus from Lithuania all the way to Berlin which just took forever. I drove the whole night and the first half of the next day and it was just really annoying. The bus driver was quite aggressive. The bus was full but luckily I had two seats for myself the whole ride.
It wasn’t that expensive. I paid 39 euros for the whole ride . The seats were quite comfortable as well. Technically speaking, for the bus ride it was okay but still my body hurt a lot after this trip and journey. I was really happy when finally being back home and laying in my bed. Technically in Berlin the trip was not over because I still had to catch the bus all the way to Hamburg. I had exactly one minute between changing the ride.
The new bus driver was quite cool actually because he was telling me to just get in and pay him later on in Hamburg. Less than it was standing online. He technically just was getting some extra money from me and also I had the Bus Ride cheaper than usual. Basically a win-win situation. I always question myself after trips like these if it is necessary to actually suffer that much. Then I tell myself YES, because I am saving a lot of money when I suffer. With the saved money I can travel more the world and get closer to my goal of visiting each country.
What is up next ?
Next week you are going to read about another spontaneous trip so stay tuned!
