Reading Time: 4 minutes

Last week I was already writing about the trip to Tromso in Norway, but that wasn’t all!

Starting with refreshment

Actually, still before the dumpster diving, we went to the harbor. In the harbor there is one sauna, in which it was possible to swim inside the harbor. There was a little section with ropes, let’s just call it an open water pool.

The lights on the pool were amazing. A bright blue which made me hyped to dive actually in it. Of course the locals use the water to cool down after the sauna, for me it would have been the same, but I didn’t want to pay the money for the sauna.

Still I had to go inside the water, to tempt it.
Getting undressed with my underwear left, I went in. People were shocked to see that, because I haven’t been in a sauna before getting inside. Actually, even though it was very cold, it was not as bad. I felt refreshed after a few seconds and I was able to control my breathing. The thing was, the water felt like a force punching me or something like that.

After being outside of the water, I was hyped to actually go back in, so I did, this time even going with my head underwater. At the end Marla went as well inside at the end due to having the fear of missing out.

Wandering around town

It was interesting, because I am not a guy liking to go shopping or anything which has to do with it. We went from shop to show, because Marla wanted to find something, which she wasn’t purchasing at the end.

The interesting part of the whole thing was that we would have been able to try out interesting animals to eat. Whales, reindeer and something else exotic. At the end I tried whale and Marla was shocked, due to the fact I was eating meat. I am a pescetarian, which means I only eat fish, but no meat.
For me personally, a whale is a fish with no meat. It also tastes different from other meat, but also different from fish. It was getting a debate in my friend circle. In the end most people would say it is fish, while it is actually meat, but I don’t care as much.

It might be possible to criticize it, but in the end it is part of the culture to eat whale. The people used to do that of course more often than in modern times.

We also meet a few people who see themselves as part of the indigenous community of the town. There is also quite a strong connection for them and adding to that it is very important for them to say it. Even learning the old language was something to do.

The food issue

Getting food was actually an issue and having it cheap or free is even harder. Luckily the one host was working in a tapas bar in which he was receiving many leftovers, which he brought home. Due to that we were able to eat for free and actually have good food.

I still went cooking to add to this. We actually haven’t gone to any restaurant (luckily) and honestly I don’t even want to know how expensive it would be!

For locals it might be easy to pay for that, due to higher salary, but imagine people from third world countries would struggle a lot with visiting amazing places like this one.

I was happy when I was back home to see the “normal” prices again, which gave me a little smile on my face.

Returning

After only three days in Tromso it was time to return again. This time we were getting the normal bus, which we didn’t know existed before. It was so much cheaper in general, but we ended up not paying, due to not understanding the system and the app.

If you walk a bit further at the airport, you are able to catch the normal bus and save at least a little bit of money.

The airport was crowded with people, who all wanted to return to Poland.
The flight was amazing, during the flight the crew was closing all lights and it was actually possible to see nordic lights during the flight. Capturing them with the phone wasn’t sadly possible, but still seeing them was amazing!
Also amazing that the crew was doing that in order to make everyone happy.

Overnight in Gdansk (Danzig)

Marla needed to go somewhere else than me, so we splitted up. Before that happened we were finding an amazing spot in the airport. It was in a corner, so blowing up the air mattress here was an amazing idea.
Being covered and away from people and being able to sleep in peace. I woke up many times and in the middle of the night Marla left.

I kept sleeping there for a few hours and had actually quite good sleep, especially due to my air mattress being amazing!

Problems at the airport

While boarding my flight, the staff was first letting me pass, but then called me back, in order to check my backpack. It pissed me off a lot, because actually they left me through already. I removed some things from the backpack and stuffed it inside this small box, in order to not pay extra.

To be honest I was a little bit rude to the staff, which is not usual for me, but it annoyed me a lot. In the end I had to pay nothing extra and was able to board the plane. So annoying.

I flew to Dortmund in Germany. From there I wanted to take a shared car ride to Hamburg.

The shared car ride

The shared car ride was actually quite cool. With the driver being friendly and having a woman from Georgia in it as well. We were talking the whole ride, which made the ride itself being done way quicker. Such a good feeling.

Making connections feels good. When I was home in Hamburg, I was just starting to relax a bit. I felt tired, feeling weak. It is something which is happening more and more with the style of traveling I am doing!

What is up next?

Next week, you will be reading about another spontaneous trip, which will be longer though than all of these short ones, so stay tuned!
