The city features a well-developed infrastructure, including a metro and trams—the only city in Kazakhstan with such a system. Central Asia’s other metro city is Tashkent in Uzbekistan, with Astana’s metro still under construction.

Almaty comes alive at night with a big nightlife scene. During my visit, I found plenty of bars and clubs crowded with people, making it easy to socialize and enjoy the evening. Many places stay open late, and the city feels lively and welcoming, though some areas can feel a bit sketchy after dark. While I never faced any issues, it’s wise to stay aware of your surroundings.

Astana, now known as Nur-Sultan, is a modern city in Kazakhstan’s heartland. Unlike Almaty, which is surrounded by mountains, Astana is a flat, expansive city. It’s relatively isolated, with few attractions nearby besides some national parks, like Burabay National Park.
The city’s standout feature is its modern infrastructure. With futuristic buildings and well-planned urban spaces, Astana is visually striking and cleaner than Almaty. The cost of living is also lower here.
Astana is primarily a working city with a transient population, as many come from other regions of Kazakhstan for employment. The city has a modern, somewhat impersonal vibe, lacking the traditional Central Asian atmosphere you might expect.
Nightlife in Astana
Astana’s nightlife is quite subdued. During my visit, I found that the city’s evening scene was limited, with few people on the streets and little happening in terms of nightlife. The city feels safe, with no shady atmosphere, but if you’re looking for big nightlife, Astana might not be the place.
Why Should You Visit Almaty?
Visit Almaty if you’re interested in experiencing lively nightlife and exploring cultural activities. It’s ideal for those who enjoy outdoor adventures like skiing and hiking. Although Almaty might not boast traditional beauty, its surrounding landscape and vibrant atmosphere offer a unique charm.
Almaty can be crowded and is not the cleanest city, but it has an open vibe and a lot to offer, making it a great place for extroverts and those keen on exploring Central Asia.
Why Should You Visit Astana?
Astana is worth a visit if you’re fascinated by modern architecture and enjoy clean, well-planned urban spaces. It’s a city that showcases Kazakhstan’s rapid development and ambition, with impressive landmarks like the world’s largest tent.
While Astana is excellent for a short city trip, it may not be the best choice for a prolonged stay. The city is cheaper in terms of food and activities but lacks the variety found in other destinations.
Which City Is Better for Me to Visit?
Choosing between Almaty and Astana depends on your preferences. Almaty offers a more active experience with plenty to do both in the city and its surroundings. It might be busier and less photogenic, but is rich in experiences.
Astana, on the other hand, is unique and modern, with a distinct, futuristic appeal. It’s not the most lively city, but its special character and impressive architecture make it worth a visit.
While many favor Almaty, I personally prefer Astana. Almaty is vibrant with plenty to do and stunning natural surroundings, but it’s busy atmosphere made it hard for me to relax. The city itself lacks a distinctive charm that stands out.
In contrast, Astana offers a unique architectural style and a special character that appeals to me more. If you’re looking for a lively, activity-filled experience, Almaty is great. For a more tranquil visit with a distinctive city vibe, Astana might be your better choice.
If time allows, visiting both cities would provide a fuller picture of Kazakhstan’s diverse offerings. If you must choose, consider what aligns more with your interests: Almaty’s dynamic culture and natural beauty, or Astana’s modernity and clean, planned environment.
