Alter Flecken in Freudenberg, a historical downtown.
On the way to Luxembourg, my friend and I decided to drive a little bit out of the way, to visit the downtown Alter Flecken in Freudenberg. After seeing a picture of it online. How it was in the black white town, you will see.
Where is it located?
It is located in the west part of Germany, better in the state North Rhine-Westphalia, the most populated state in Germany.
Basically it is located to the east of the big cities in that region, like Cologne, Bonn, Dusseldorf and so on. Also to the North West of Frankfurt, which is a little bit further away.
What makes this place special?
The town of Freudenberg is a quite normal German Town, the thing making them special is the downtown called “Alte Flecken”.
After the city center was destroyed a few times, last time in the 17th century because of a big fire. The city was deciding to build the new houses with the same design.
The historical center survived the second world war, with not many destructions. Due to that, it is one of the only examples of planned and uniformy cities from the 17th century.
My experience
When visiting Freudenberg, the only reason was to see the historical city center “Alter Flecken”. We were on the way to Luxembourg from Hamburg, and it was not such a long detour, so we thought “Why not?”.
When arriving, we saw the view from up the hill, where you can have the best view! It was looking really cool, like you can see in the pictures.
Also going inside of the center was nice, it was of course not the most amazing city ever, but interesting to see.
Summary
Alter Flecken in Freudenburg has a lot of history going on and due to the uniform design it is looking unique and beautiful, especially at night, when there are lights on as well.
It is quite a distance from main attractions and not sure if you can spend a long time there. We were there for around two hours. So if you are somehow on the way there and want to see it, it is not a waste of time, just need to know, you may not spend the most time there.
I would love to hear your experiences about this place, or questions. Share it with me in the comments.
