When visiting Bangladesh, I was surprised there were Tuk Tuk on the road, but they were not the same as somewhere else. Tuk Tuk in Bangladesh are just different.

What is a Tuk Tuk?

Basically a Tuk Tuk is a vehicle with a motor and three reels, one in the front and two in the back. They are used very often as transportation methods as taxis. They are cheap and efficient. In countries like Thailand, India and Bangladesh you find them everywhere!

Tuk Tuk are usually open on the side, for easy access and exit.

What makes Tuk Tuk in Bangladesh special?

What makes them special isn’t the way they build in the first place. Tuk Tuks in Bangladesh have three reels and they sound the same, but there is one major difference.

They are not open! They have a steel grid. This grid is only able to open from the inside. The driver and the passenger are able to open it, but nobody else!

Why are they making the Tuk Tuk like that?

I was asking myself the same question and there is a simple answer for it, which is probably quite obvious.

They are having it for safety reasons. In Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh there were many accidents of passengers or drivers being harmed and this is an efficient way of stopping it.

Does it actually work?

When I was driving in a Tuk Tuk, while being in Dhaka, there were people who for sure tried to get into the vehicle, but weren’t able to make it. It seems to work, but on the other hand, the traffic is very hard, so armored robberies could still work out when you are not able to move away.
