Oman is a country where you can for sure bring your tent and do some camping. Here is everything you need to know. Especially inform yourself of the time to travel, during summer it is for most places to be warm and in winter it can be in some places too cold.

So basically find out what type of experience you are searching and choose the regions according to your preference.

Where can you do Camping in Oman?

In Oman you are allowed to do wild camping almost everywhere. You can put your tent up almost everywhere in nature and the best part of it is, it is completely legal!

Most important to know, Oman is not only a desert country, you can find a lot of nature in the Wadis and also near the coast. In the mountains and in Salalah it is possible as well. So don’t worry, you may need to put your tent up in the desert, if you don’t want to.

Places I was camping in Oman

In Oman I used only camping and Couchsurfing for accommodation. It is very simple there. The places I used my tent were twice at the coast.

Camping in Tiwi

In the small town Tiwi, I put the tent up directly at the beach, so it was possible to take a swim before sleeping and after waking up.
The hotel staff nearby knew it, and invited for a shower and charging possibilities which was great to go longer days without needing a real roof above the head.
In Tiwi there was not much to do, but with the long beach front, it was a great place to stay!

Camping in Muscat

Muscat the capital city is very large and nearby at the coast there was twice the need of putting the tent up, twice it was at some public beach.
Nearby there were many possibilities of getting some food or drinks to get through the day.

Also here nobody had an issue with the tents and also many tourists came with their camper van and stayed nearby as well. The locals are used to seeing tourists coming with their tents or cars and staying in natural places in Oman.

Camping in Wadi Tiwi

Next to the little village Tiwi there was the next opportunity to put the tent up. At a higher ground surrounded by palm trees and being near a waterfall, it was the best place to put the tent up.

There were not many people in general during the day, which was giving me some peace while staying there.

Where else in Oman are good places to try camping?

Camping in Wahiba Sands

In the beautiful Desert region in Wahiba Sands it is of course possible to do camping as well. There are high temperature drops during the night, but also like in Jordan, it is beautiful at night time with great experiences waiting for you!

Camping in Jebel Shams

Camping in Jebel Shams and the mountain region in general is great when wanting to experience something completely different in the country. With general lower temperatures it can make even the daytime quite comfortable.

Camping in Salalah

In Salalah, close to Yemen, during a specific time the possibility is to see a region with beautiful green landscape and with a lot of life. Also having good sand beaches, which is not really the case in the rest of the country not really the case. It is worth visiting Salalah, but check the timing!

Wadi Safety Tips for camping

Wadis are beautiful but can be risky, particularly due to the possibility of flash floods. While camping in Wadi Tiwi, I took precautions to ensure my safety, with the higher ground it was safe.

  1. Check the Weather: Before heading out, always check the weather forecast. Even if it’s not raining at your location, rain in the mountains can cause sudden floods in wadis. During heavy rainfall, wadis can fill rapidly, making it extremely dangerous to camp too close to the water.
  2. Choose Safe Camping Spots: Set up your camp on higher ground, away from the wadi bed. The pools of water and flowing streams are tempting to camp nearby but it’s important to avoid low-lying areas in case of sudden water appearing.
  3. Inform Others of Your Plans: Oman’s wilderness can feel remote, and it’s essential to let someone know where you are going, especially when camping in wadis far away from civilization. The internet connection may be limited in these areas, so it’s good to have a backup plan.

General Camping Safety and local customs

When camping along the coast near Muscat or Tiwi, it’s important to be aware of your surroundings and the natural elements:

  1. Beware of Tides: While camping near the sea, make sure to set up your tent above the high tide line to avoid getting caught by rising waters during the night. This is important in general, so not only in Oman.
  2. Pack Essentials: Oman’s remote camping spots, especially in wadis, in the desert or along the coast, often lack nearby facilities. Bring enough water, food, and supplies.. Temperatures can also drop at night, especially in the desert, so pack warm layers even if the day is hot.
  3. Respect Local Customs: While Oman is a relatively open country for camping, it’s important to respect local traditions and practices, especially when near villages or religious sites. This should also be a general thing while traveling.
  4. Prepare for the Heat: If you’re camping in the desert, be mindful of the extreme temperatures, especially in summer. Always carry plenty of water and set up your campsite late in the afternoon to avoid the peak heat.

By taking these safety precautions, your camping trip in Oman can be both adventurous and secure, allowing you to fully enjoy the incredible natural beauty the country has to offer.
