Skiing and snowboarding, winter sport in general, is expensive. I’ve often been to Austria and in general when looking at Europe it is just super expensive! Not so much fun for the bank account. Discover a place to do cheap skiing!
Bakuriani
While visiting Georgia we went hitchhiking into the mountain village Bakuriani. We booked a hotel to experience the winter a little bit. Enjoying snow and having a bit from the beautiful winter in the country.
In Bakuriani you can’t do as much, due to its size, but it is very beautiful, so what to do?
Skiing prices in Bakuriani
We were checking out the ski resorts and I was surprised at the prices.
In the big ski region of Bakuriani there was a daily pass for 55 Laris (1 Euro = 2,86 Laris). So less than 20 Euros.
Renting the ski equipment/clothes is possible for 10 Euros per person and that is just compared to anything else in Europe super cheap! It is cheap but how is the region and the slopes?
How is the ski region in Bakuriani?
It is looking very professional, even having some restaurants up the mountains. The gondolas and lifts are of good quality and they have a few of them.
The slopes are of great quality, with many kilometers of slopes. From beginners to advanced people there is something for everyone. We were there in March and for March the slopes were perfect and that was still at 4pm which is usually not the case in Austria!
They even have snow cannons, which didn’t have to be used yet and the equipment you can rent is also very good for the price!
There are not as many people on the slopes, at least not the harder ones, due to not having as many trained people and due to beginner mountains.
In the beginner mountains there you can’t get a daily pass, but for each lift which is nothing making sense when you have skied already.
Will it stay like this?
Actually I think that will change soon, there are hotels growing out of the earth from everywhere. People are realizing that Georgia is having more potential than you might have thought and especially the skiing is just wow!
Not many tourists, but with social media and everything hidden places are now after discovering quickly tourism and the reasons why you should visit are going to be not there anymore. For the next or the next two years it should still be great for visiting. I probably will do that next year proper as a skiing vacation, it’s just too cheap when comparing it to everything else I know! Most importantly, it is not only cheap comparing to what I know, it is also similar in quality!
