If you’re heading to Bogotá, Colombia, and you’re up for a challenge, make sure to climb Monserrate. Visiting this iconic mountain was one of the highlights of my trip. My friend and I decided to walk up and down, discovering the crowded market and taking in the stunning views from the top. Trust me, it’s totally worth it, but it’s not easy to do! Lets discover Monserrate in Bogotá Colombia!
What is Monserrate?
Monserrate is a mountain that towers over Bogotá, offering panoramic views of the city and beyond, when the weather is good. At 3,152 meters above sea level, it’s a significant landmark with a rich history. The sanctuary at the top is a pilgrimage site, attracting both locals and tourists.
The Climb
- Starting the Journey: My friend and I started our climb early in the morning to avoid the midday heat. Before beginning the hike, we enjoyed a local breakfast at a little local restaurant near the base. The path is well-marked, but be prepared – it’s a steep and challenging hike.
- The Ascent: The climb up Monserrate is tough. You’ll be ascending over 1,500 steps, and the altitude makes it even more demanding. But the effort is rewarded with breathtaking views of Bogotá as you make your way up.
- Reaching the top: After a bit more than an hour of steady climbing, we reached the top. The sense of accomplishment was overwhelming, and the views were simply stunning. You can see the entire city sprawled out below, with the Andes Mountains in the distance.
The Monastery at the Top
Instead of heading straight to the market, we explored the Monserrate Monastery. This beautiful church is a calm place where you can relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. The monastery itself is an architectural gem, and the interior offers a sense of calm after the tough climb.
Llamas Along the Way
One of the unique features of the hike up Monserrate is the chance to see llamas. These friendly creatures are often found grazing along the path, and some locals offer photo opportunities with them. It adds a delightful touch to the journey and makes for some great pictures.
The Lazy Way: The Cable Car
If the climb sounds too tough, don’t worry – you can still enjoy Monserrate. There’s a cable car that will take you to the top without the physical exertion. The ride offers its own spectacular views and is a great option for those who prefer it more chill. The round-trip fare for the cable car is approximately 22,000 COP (about $6 USD) on weekdays and 14,000 COP (about $4 USD) for a one-way trip.
Due to the existence of the cable car, it is very crowded on top.
Weather Conditions
The weather on Monserrate can be quite variable. Bogotá’s climate is generally cool and temperate, with average temperatures ranging between 10°C and 19°C. However, the weather can change quickly, so it’s a good idea to bring a light jacket or sweater. Mornings are often the clearest, providing the best views, while afternoons can become cloudy and rainy.
While I was visiting Moserrate, it was very foggy, but still great to have some more chill weather.
