Reading Time: 4 minutes

After doing a short family trip in Sylt (an island in Germany) it was possible to do two things, driving back to Germany or going a longer way and checking out Denmark for a bit as well. Find out about something interesting, which is nothing normal to hear.

Where is it located?

Denmark in general is a country located in northern Europe and is a country in Scandinavia. It borders directly Germany by land and Sweden by bridge. Since this year there is also an official border with Canada and Denmark. Basically Canada and Greenland, but Greenland is part of Denmark.

Rømø is an island, which is just three kilometers away from Sylt. 40% of the island is out of sand and the other 60% is green, with plants growing. There are a bit over 500 people, but many tourists come there every year.

It is an island, which is actually growing each year, which is not the case for many islands, especially in northern Germany.

When searching online, I didn’t find a real way to get there. It could work with hitchhiking, which seems to be going well in Denmark, from what I heard from friends of mine. Also by taking a ferry from Sylt could be a thing.

Driving on the beach?

Actually it is a common thing to drive on the sand of the island. Each year, even a race is happening at that place. With vintage cars there is a car race taking place.

People are driving with any kind of car down the beach and going to drive on the sand. Many are staying the whole day, to also do other things, like doing kite surfing there. It is very windy there, so perfect conditions for it.

I was, for example, flying with my drone over there. It is actually important to have a stable drone for the flight, so I would not recommend the one drone I am using now mainly. I can highly recommend this drone → The drone ←  it is for the price value one of the best and safest and I flew for a long time with it before it got stolen in Turkey.

The sand of the beach is really strong and not an issue driving on it. Would not recommend using parts of the beach, where no cars are driving or near the water, when not feeling safe.

How was the experience?

For both of us, it was the first time driving on a beach with a car. It was weird at first, because it seem not like the right thing to do. If we get stuck, that could be really bad for us as well. Just after being on the beach, it was a lot of fun actually driving there. The car was for sure not made for a normal beach, but at that one it was fine.

Also it was cool letting the drone fly and watch people having fun in the water, even though it was definitely not the time for it, because it was wintertime. When thinking of it, that during the winter time many people are there, so that the beach is full, how full does it need to be during summer?

It was to be fair a really sunny day, which was just cold. In the Nordic countries a sunny day in winter can bring you a mental feeling of a nice summer day, so people are using it to enjoy life.

We, to be honest, didn’t spend much time at the beach, but the little time we spent was good!

What is good to know?

Next time for sure it is important, to have warm clothes with you, to not freeze to death. Even during summer, it is important to have a jacket with you, because the wind at the North Sea can be really cold and pleasurable.

When I would think of being alone at the beach, it would not be recommended to drive on it, because when you are not experienced, then don’t risk anything.

When going into the water, don’t go out too far, because the stream of the North Sea can be really strong.

Respecting the nature around, this is especially important in this region. The Wadden Sea is easy to harm and could cause big issues for many people.

Summary

While on the way home, there was time to stop at a beach, on which it is possible to drive on. Nothing like that would be possible in Hamburg, the town in Germany I am from.

It was a lot of fun driving there and seeing people enjoying life as well. It was during the covid time and people still went out with friends and family.

We didn’t spend a long time there, but enough to experience it for a while at least.

This drone is perfect for traveling, not big with a high quality, the price of good quality drones are sadly never cheap but it is worth it when using. Not all countries are allowing drones, please check that before traveling with it.
