Qatar, a country that has faced global criticism, especially during the lead-up to the 2022 World Cup. Also due to supporting  terrorist organizations.

The country is located in the Middle East and shares a border with Saudi-Arabia.

Qatar is a small nation that became rich due to oil, similar to many other Middle Eastern countries. The country aims to improve its image through big events and impressive architecture. People go there for work opportunities, and Qatar Airways stands out as one of the world’s best airlines.

What I Expected

I expected a place similar to Dubai, with big and luxury buildings. I thought it would be extremely hot and filled with people driving supercars. While this would personally not be my preference, I had to visit this country at some point anyway. I assumed Doha would be expensive, with a lack of cultural aspects.

Reality Check

During a transit stop after returning from Southeast Asia, I explored Doha, Qatar’s capital. A local host, originally from Lebanon, provided me with a metrocard for city exploration. The metro was primarily used by foreign workers and provided an escape from the intense heat of July, which you were feeling even after a short time outdoors.

Though I didn’t meet any Qatari locals, the foreigners I met were amazing to have around. Visiting the national museum which offered insights into the country’s history and culture, which surprised me. Exploring the local market felt like an authentic Middle Eastern experience, quite enjoyable.

While there were impressive buildings, luxury cars were less common than I expected. People seemed to go mainly to malls and were in general friendly. My interactions were only with fellow foreigners, which was a bit disappointing, yet they were all incredibly warm and kind.

Summary

Qatar is diverse and relies on foreigners, even if they cannot receive citizenship. They are making the country into what it is.

My experience exceeded expectations, but I would consider revisiting only during a transit, not as a primary destination. I found little to dislike—food, malls, museums, and the city itself were all enjoyable. The weather was the downside, visiting during summer is not smart.

For a short visit, Qatar is worth exploring and deserving of a fair evaluation. Every country has areas for critique, after all.
