If you’re heading to Armenia, Garni is a good destination to visit.
It is located about 30 kilometers east of Yerevan, Garni is a place rich in history and natural beauty. Here is everything you need to know about Garni. So lets go exploring Garni.

History of Garni

Garni is best known for its ancient temple, the Temple of Garni, which history started back during the 1st century AD. This temple, dedicated to the sun god Mihr, is the only Greco-Roman colonnaded building in Armenia and the former Soviet Union. The temple was constructed during the reign of the Roman Emperor Nero and is a great example of classical architecture. Throughout history, Garni has been a cultural and religious center, and it still holds a special place in Armenian heritage.
Especially being surrounded in this stunning location.

What to see in Garni

  1. Temple of Garni: The main attraction. The structure is made of basalt and has been partially restored after an earthquake in 1679. It’s a perfect spot for photography and soaking in ancient history.
  2. Garni Gorge: Just below the temple, you’ll find the stunning Garni Gorge. The gorge is famous for its unique rock formations known as the “Symphony of Stones,” which look like enormous organ pipes.
  3. Bathhouse Ruins: Near the temple, you can explore the remains of a Roman bathhouse with mosaic floors. These mosaics depict scenes of sea life and are well-preserved.
  4. Hiking Trails: The area around Garni offers beautiful hiking trails. One popular hike is to the nearby Geghard Monastery, which you for sure check out.

How to Get There

I hitchhiked to Garni, which was an adventure in itself. Hitchhiking in Armenia is relatively safe and common, and the locals are friendly and also helpful. If you prefer another method, you can take a marshrutka (minibus) from Yerevan. These leave from the Gai Bus Station and are quite affordable.

Why You Might Skip Garni

  1. Tourist Crowds: Garni can get crowded, especially during peak tourist season. If you prefer quieter, less touristy spots, this might not be for you. It was very crowded when I visited and I wasn’t there during the peak season.
  2. Weather Conditions: The weather can be unpredictable. Summers are hot, and winters can be quite cold, but this to be honest is all over Armenia and not really a good reason to not visit.
  3. Road Conditions: The road to Garni can be rough and winding. The infrastructure isn’t the best as well, but everything can be handled if you really want to see.

Summary

Garni is a fantastic destination if you’re interested in history, nature, and unique landscapes. It offers a view into Armenia’s history and stunning natural beauty. Hitchhiking there added a sense of adventure to my trip, but there are other travel options if you prefer. However, if you can’t deal with bad infrastructure and bumpy roads with many tourists, you might reconsider. Overall, Garni is worth the visit for its historical treasure and beautiful scenery. My rating would be maybe like a 6 of 10, I was surprised by finding something like this in the Caucasus.
