A most likely unknown region, which is hard to reach, but is it even worth it? Lets go exploring Khndzoresk!

What is Khndzoresk?

Khndzoresk is an ancient village known for its cave homes. These caves, which were inhabited until the 1950s, give you a feeling for the past.
The village has a long history dating back to the Middle Ages and has played an important role in the region’s cultural and historical landscape.
Located close to the Nagorno-Karabakh region, Khndzoresk has not been directly affected by the conflict.

It is located roughly 250 km away from the capital and is right next to Goris.

What to See in Khndzoresk

  1. Khndzoresk Swinging Bridge: The main attraction is the swinging bridge that connects both sides. This bridge, 160 meters long and 63 meters high, offers amazing views of the surrounding landscape. Crossing it is an adventure in itself, especially if you have a fear of heights, like myself.
  2. Cave Homes: Once you cross the bridge, you’ll find the ancient cave homes. These caves were used as residences, schools, and churches by the villagers. Exploring them in the foggy surroundings adds a mystical touch to the experience. During my visit in fall it was very foggy.
  3. St. Hripsime Church: Located at the caves, this small, centuries-old church is still in use today. It is very cute and easy to miss.
  4. Hiking Trails: The area around Khndzoresk offers several hiking trails with amazing views of the canyon and surrounding mountains. The trails can be challenging but are well worth the effort.

How to Get There

I used hitchhiking to reachand do some exploring in Khndzoresk.
Hitchhiking in Armenia is safe and the locals are very welcoming.
They still are even though I was hitchhiking with a terrorist once.
However, the roads to Khndzoresk are in shitty condition which is making the journey quite challenging.
If you prefer not to hitchhike, you can take a bus or taxi from Goris, the nearest town.
Also hiking there from Goris is possible, it is just 15km.

Why You Might Skip Khndzoresk

  1. Difficult Access: The road conditions are bad, making it hard to reach. If you’re not up for a rough journey, this might not be the best destination for you.
  2. Limited Facilities: Khndzoresk is a remote area with very few facilities. If you need comfort and convenience, this place is not for you.
  3. Weather Conditions: The weather can be unpredictable, with foggy conditions that can limit visibility. Make sure to check the weather forecast, if it is important for you.
  4. Not Worth a Special Trip: If you’re already in the region, Khndzoresk is definitely worth a visit. However, just driving down specifically for it might not be worth the effort due to the difficult access and limited facilities.

Summary

Khndzoresk is a fantastic destination if you’re looking for adventure, history, and great landscapes. The swinging bridge and ancient caves will give you a different type of experience that you won’t find somewhere else in the country.

Hitchhiking there made it actually quite simple to reach, but the roads are very bad and for this short distance to Goris it took very long. If you’re up for the adventure and are already in the region, exploring Khndzoresk is for sure something you should do and worth the visit.
