Georgia is a country located in the Caucasus region and is sharing a border with Russia, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Turkey. It is known for its landscape and nature. There is the possibility of going into the mountains or even relaxing on the beach. Georgia has a lot to offer.
In Georgia there is no law against wild camping in nature, unless it is being done on private property or when being reminded with a sign. But how is it really camping there? Is the country of Georgia a dream for wild camping?
How is it in reality?
We went camping twice, once next to the botanical garden in Batumi and the other time inside of the central park in Borjomi. Each time people knew we were camping there. Once even the security guide and each time there wasn’t an issue at all.
It seems that there isn’t a legal issue about it, but there are other issues. When camping in or nearby cities you are most likely to be “protected” by stray dogs. They are going to not move away from your side, probably in hope for some food.
There are many places which are sadly covered with a lot of trash and it is not nice to put the tent up at these.
Where is it good to go camping?
Georgia has a lot of beautiful landscapes. When you are going to take some effort and go for some hikes in the mountains or up to a lake or something outside of any towns. There are great possibilities to enjoy the beauty of this country.
Also when it is winter there, like us, you should for sure bring warm clothes and equipment, also it isn’t easy finding gas for your cooking equipment.
When you search, you will find jewels of nature.
What should you know before planning a camping trip to Georgia?
I believe Georgia, even though many people are traveling there, is underrated when it comes to camping. Most people traveling there are exploring the culture of the country in the cities like Batumi and Tbilisi. Not many take the effort of really exploring the countryside as much.
Especially in winter, when places are less crowded by tourists, it is your chance of doing a trip without many others and having silent time in those busy times in life.
There are many orange, mandarin and citrus trees found all over the country and they are amazing. Especially amazing are the mandarins, check if it is private property though before taking them. Also they are not looking good, but they are!
Take a filter with you, there are many fresh water sources, so when you go for a hike I believe you should be able to find enough water to survive during your trip there.
In general the Caucasus region is beautiful, when it comes to nature. Compared to Armenia for example there are more tourists going to Georgia. Also there is the infrastructure a bit better and probably when not traveling as much, it could be easier in Georgia, also the flights are usually cheaper there.
