Jardin de Santiago is a little park in Mexico city, what makes it worth visiting?
Where is it located?
The garden, or park is located in the part of the city called Tlatelolco. The surrounding regions are known for being really dangerous, which is during the day definitely not the case. At night, I would be more careful.
The closest metro station would be Tlatelolco or Garibaldi/Lagunilla, depending from which direction you would arrive. From both stations, it would not be much of a walking distance.
What is the park like?
It is really clean over there, not like in other places of the city. Not many people know this place, and also many locals don’t.
In the surrounding area there are a lot of things you can explore. For example the square of the three cultures, to which also an article will be made.
Local markets are able to be visited and it is just not far from anything. With the metro it costs one way for five pesos ($0,25) it is also not expensive to get there.
In the Jardin de Santiago, you are able to find many different plants and also benches, so it is great to relax there a little bit from the busy city life, which you have everywhere in Mexico City.
It is surrounded by walls and was created in the 1960’s
What is special about Jardin de Santiago?
The Monoptero, which is standing in the middle of this place, is really special. Not the building itself, it is the acoustic, which is found in it.
When standing in the middle circle, the sound you create will be different from normal. This you are also just able to hear, when you are in the middle of it. When you are outside of it, you hear the sound as normal, which was really interesting to see.
Summary
When wanting to explore the region around Tlatelolco and wanting to escape from the city, then this is a great way to do so! For sure, it is not big and by just walking through, you will not be able to spend a long time there, but you could.
The Monoptero in the middle is because of the acoustical reason it is great to visit and to try it out yourself, you will enjoy it!
I would love to hear your experiences about this place, or questions. Share it with me in the comments.
