Today is just a quick story time from my trip to South Sudan. It is about the Kenya Market, a place where you can find handicrafts and souvenirs.
I visited this market with my friend from Brazil who is working for the UN and helped the society in the country during my visit. He took me to many special places and one was the Kenya Market.
Is the Kenya Market worth visiting?
The Kenya Market is located in the capital Juba, with many shops to look at. Most shops have the same thing and most people working there are not originally from South Sudan, at least 2020.
You are able to find unique souvenirs with the South Sudanese flag or map on it. Something I like a lot, because for me it is one of the best flags out there.
The prices were okay and you were able to bargain a little bit, which I learned during my several visits to the Middle East.
The people were really nice and it also is feeling safe, so I can for sure recommend you checking it out!
What was special about the visit?
I wanted to find a special coin from the local money, which was and still is basically worth nothing and nobody is using it anymore. During my visit everyone just used the cash.
I found one lady selling the coin to me and basically she asked for 350 times the price, today it is even more than 620 as much. For me that seemed like something I could not believe, so I tried to bargain, but it wasn’t possible.
I walked to every store and asked for the coin, but the first lady was the only one who had it, so at the end I had no option and had to buy it for the overpriced price. Still I think it was worth it, because it is something special but I kind of felt sad about not being as good at bargains as I thought. This is with supply and demand.
