Reading Time: 3 minutes

Kuala Lumpur has one of the busiest airports in Southeast Asia and for sure the best or one of the best prices for flights. Other airports like the one in Singapore are also having good flights, but in comparison it is quite good.

Location

The location of the airport is actually not as good. It is far away from the center by distance, but there is a fast train going and also buses. Still the distance of 60km to the center is just too far for such a busy airport in my opinion.

There are two terminals, which are connected with a free shuttle bus, the train is also going to the other terminal, but that service is not for free. The price isn’t high, but still.

Sleeping possibilities

In Terminal one and two there are actually quite good sleeping possibilities, I was sleeping at both! In the terminals you are able to find benches without the barrier, which makes it possible to fully lay down. This is something not often found in airports anymore, which is quite sad.

It is not really loud at night, which makes the sleeping experience not bad and more enjoyable than you might think.

My sleeping spot from the second night

My experience

I arrived twice at the Kuala Lumpur international airport and had to stay overnight twice. It was both of the time a late arrival, so making no sense really leaving the city, also due to its distance!

It was quiet, there were some announcements but at a decent level during the night time. There are many possibilities to get some food, most people for sure choosed the fast food options. For me I did the same, because they were the closest.

I was able to sleep on benches, which were without the barriers and that was for sleeping just amazing. Usually this is not a common thing in airports, sadly. I always have my air mattress with me. It was also used on the second night, because I wanted to get a bit further away from a person snoring.

The toilets were clean and the people working there were not making an issue and just let you sleep. Even though I was sleeping outside the boarding zone, I was feeling safe. Also the fact, that others were sleeping at the airport too was giving me a better feeling

What was negative?

The first thing which was annoying for me was the fact that I had to change my terminal. Usually that is not an issue, but in Kuala Lumpur it is. The other terminal was only accessible via train, bus or taxi. The bus is free, so that is good, but the process of getting there is annoying.

Kuala Lumpur is a busy airport, even at 10pm the line at the immigration was huge. More than six people were working for the international travelers, but it took forever. The line in front of me was just massive.

After 30-60min I was getting out and to the other terminal. The bus was quite easy to find.

After arriving at the terminal, the next annoying thing happened, it was not possible to get into the boarding zone. Only a few hours before that was an option. This is sadly at other airports too, but it is still something which would be better than staying outside in the open terminal for the whole night.

Summary

The Kuala Lumpur international airport is a very decent one! I was spending two nights there and didn’t mind it. It is not a boring airport like the one in Paris for example, but also not the best I have been to.

In Southeast Asia, flying from this airport to other destinations makes a lot of sense. Sadly the airport is far away from the city, which isn’t the biggest issue, but not as enjoyable.
