The Kutaisi airport in Georgia was rebuilt in 2012 and is now the second busiest airport in the country. It is mainly operated by cheap carriers such as Wizz Air for example.
Location
The airport is located outside of the city Kutaisi. It is directly next to a connecting road to the sea town Batumi and the capital Tbilisi.
Due to its location there are many public transportation options going in many directions. Kutaisi is in the middle of the country, so perfect for eather.
Also when wanting to explore the country by hitchhiking it’s just a great location. You can go out of the airport and basically could start right away and have good chances of people stopping quickly.
Sleeping possibilities
When getting out of the plane there is no way to not go through the immigration. Sleeping before the public area isn’t an option.
When getting to the public area there is a terrace and a nicely built platform with charging options. This is great to put an air mattress up and spend the night there.
The toilets are clean and also directly there.
Also when you are in the departure region there are some fake grass areas, near the smoking area, in which you can lay down comfortably.
Sim card
Getting a sim card is super easy, for 14 Lari (1 Euro is 2.86 Lari) you are able to get a sim card for two weeks and unlimited internet. It is working right after moving it into your phone.
Simple and also great internet which is working in all regions of the country. There is more than one option, so you can find the best option for you.
I recommend getting a sim card, because things are way easier and most people aren’t speaking English.
My experience
When we arrived, due to a delay, at 3 in the morning, we did not want to start the trip yet.
The immigration was quickly done and we were amazed by how nicely the airport appeart.
After getting out of the non-public area we were getting a sim card right away and went searching for a sleeping possibility.
You walk into the public area and then to the right side where the check-in shelter for the departures are located and just head right to the plattform.
Sleeping went well, there were announcements, but still it was peaceful. Not many people were around and nobody wanted to wake us up or anything like that.
In the morning we went out of the airport and started hitchhiking right away which was super easy.
What is negative?
When wanting to explore Kutaisi it’s of course not good with the location and the prices are extraordinary, comparing to the whole country.
In general I would say that there weren’t many negative things to talk about. I enjoyed my experience as an arriving and as a departing person. It is for sure one of the better airports.
Summary
Kutaisi airport is a well organized and good looking one, with the mountains surrounding it.
Sleeping is working out good and getting from A to B is easy and even when you are planning to visit other cities it is a great place to start and finish your trip.
