Having eleven hours for a layover in Nairobi – Kenya, that is kind of too long, but it is possible to spend the time well. In general there are many things which you could do to kill time, one example, I will present.
What was the plan?
The plan was to spend the time in Nairobi useful and making experiences, so as not to spend just the whole time at the airport.
Before arriving in Nairobi, it was time to contact people on Couchsurfing, for maybe wanting to hangout, during the layover. Surprisingly a person was found, who was inviting, to get to her place. Further planning wasn’t happening.
The experience
Arriving in Nairobi and getting out of the airport was easy, the border control was not strict at all. Just a visa on arrival needed to be bought.
Due to the fact that not much time was there, the only quick option was a taxi to the apartment of the local person.
When arriving at her place, we prepared some local food together and ate it with our hands, which was new, but I personally liked it a lot!
Party in Nairobi
Friends came over and after having a drink in the apartment, we went out to a local club. In the club, being the only white person, was kind of funny, because I never experienced that before.
Trying to dance as well, which didn’t work out super good, so I more likely stuck to having a couple of drinks with the group we were with. It was a lot of fun and even though I looked.
When thinking of it now, I don’t even know how it was possible, making the flight to Zambia, because I don’t remember watching the time so much. But when the party was slowly over, we went back to the apartment of the host.
Spending some more time there, before heading to the airport again and being just extremely tired over there, but the experience stays.
Summary
A long layover doesn’t mean that you need to stay at the airport the whole time. From 6 hours plus, it should be possible to explore the surroundings a little bit. At least, when the airport is not too far away.
Some layovers are also more than 24 hours. During this time, you have quite a decent amount of time to explore the city you are in.
